I guess it has something to do with the generous offer Abu dhabi government has bestowed to the DUbai government. If we could remember Few months back Dubai World was the world media’s apple of the eye due to its Huge Debt, And abu dhabi made the quick move, besides they are UAE! I think Dubai that showed her deep appreciation and soaring gratitude to what abu dhabi has done by Renaming the Burj from Dubai herself unto (Sheikh)Khalifa…

Someone said the Burj Duabi bought by Abu Dhabi and to honor HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, Sad, but what to do, those who invest in that tallest building are in financial problem. When huge tree is dieing all the leaves fall. Not only millions were lost in business, but millions were out of job, imagine how many millions suffer because of bread winner lost their job. So Sad.

You can call the name change simple a Thank You to Abu Dhabi helping Dubai out financially. I just was surprised that no member of Abu Dhabi’s Royal Family was present at the opening.

You are right about the memorabilia , but were those licensed ? people just trying to capitalize on the name without license are not protected under any law (worldwide).
